This is the only profession that seeks to lower standards for education when others are raising theirs. If you can not do the required classes for entry, don't bother. It is great you have 5 years of experience as a Paramedic so you will have no problem meeting the 1000 hour experience in health care requirement. But, don't expect shortcuts when it comes to the other classes. Most health care professional degrees with the exception of Paramedic do require strong science classes.

In NY, nurses are also now expected to have a BSN (4 year degree). As already stated, other health care degrees have both the clinical and science classes that might meet the entry requirements for application. It seems you are missing the concept of 'bridge' program or that word is just misused. The PA profession has also increased its entry level for education expectations over the past few years as this profession continues to grow. Anyone who meets the prerequisite requirements can apply for a PA program which usually consists of several sciences and a Bachelors degree. It is easier for an RN with a BSN or a RRT with a BSRT to go into a PA program because they can easily include the higher sciences in their degree and they will have well over 1000 hours of clinical time in their degree. They also can easily get excellent clinical experience in the areas a PA might work and have access to physicians every day with their professional license. There are very, very few Paramedic Bachelors degree programs that meet the science and clinical track.

Most are geared toward the administrative track. The Paramedic cert and even the Associates degree usually fall way short in the sciences that transfer and in clinical time. Being a Paramedic does not allow you to just skip over all the prerequisites.

Paramedic is still a prehospital cert with a limited scope of practice focused primarily on a few emergent issues for a very short term of care.
